PRP Cost vs. Results: Key Questions You MUST Ask!
Are you sure you're getting the right kind of PRP treatment, or just paying for plasma with a fancy label? In this eye-opening episode, I pull back the curtain on what really makes platelet-rich plasma effective and why most clinics are missing the mark. If you're considering PRP for joint pain or injury recovery, this is the information you can't afford to ignore.
Dive in now before you spend a dime, because missing this episode could mean missing out on real results.

What Makes PRP Effective?

One of the most critical platelet-rich plasma quality factors is the total platelet count delivered during the procedure. Landmark studies have shown that for PRP to be clinically effective, especially in large joints like the knee, hip, or shoulder, you need at least 10 billion platelets. Anything less, and you’re essentially getting plain plasma, not platelet-rich plasma.
This isn’t new science. The pivotal Bansal study from 2021 clearly demonstrated that hitting that 10 billion platelet mark is essential for long-term efficacy in osteoarthritis treatment. So if your clinic is delivering 2 billion or even 4 billion platelets, it’s no surprise if you’re not getting the healing you hoped for. PRP only works when it's dosed correctly.
The Role of Kits, Centrifuges, and Blood Volume in PRP Quality
Another major factor in PRP quality is the technology used to prepare it, specifically, the centrifuge system and the PRP kit. A second 2021 study by Professor Jeremy Magalon reviewed 50 different commercial systems and found enormous differences in recovery rates of platelets.
Let’s break it down. The average human has 150,000 to 400,000 platelets per microliter of blood. If a clinic is only drawing 15cc of blood, and using a low-quality kit with a 60% platelet recovery rate, you may be getting as little as 1.3 to 2.5 billion platelets, a fraction of what’s needed for meaningful healing.
Contrast that with a high-quality system, like the one I use, which draws 60cc or more and achieves a 90% platelet recovery rate. In one example, I was able to deliver 14.85 billion platelets to a patient’s hip joint, far exceeding the 10 billion threshold and leaving extra platelets to treat surrounding tendons and ligaments. That’s the kind of volume and precision that actually moves the needle in regenerative medicine.
Why PRP Pricing Alone Is Misleading
When considering for PRP, price should be the last question, not the first. Instead, ask your doctor:
How much blood will you draw?
What system are you using to concentrate the platelets?
What is the expected platelet recovery rate?
Do you use imaging guidance like ultrasound or fluoroscopy for accuracy?
Is sedation, bracing, or follow-up care included in the price?
Many clinics cut corners, using inadequate kits, low volumes, and no image guidance, all while still charging a premium price. Remember, you’re not just paying for a procedure. You’re investing in your health, recovery, and long-term function.
Go Beyond the Joint and Treat the Whole System
PRP isn’t just about injecting platelets into a joint. It’s about understanding the entire musculoskeletal system, tendons, ligaments, surrounding tissues, and treating the full picture. That’s why I don’t just inject inside the joint. I target everything that supports it, because real healing requires a comprehensive approach.
This work isn’t a side gig, it’s a specialty. Regenerative medicine isn’t something you add onto a traditional practice that still leans on steroids and ablations. This dedication demands precision, intention, and a profound respect for the body's inherent need to heal.
Final Thoughts
Before booking a PRP treatment, stop and ask the right questions. Don’t fall into the trap of shopping by price alone. Focus instead on the platelet-rich plasma quality factors that actually determine whether or not your treatment will work.
Because you’re not just a patient, you’re a whole person. You deserve more than a quick fix. You deserve expertise, care, and a treatment that gives you a real shot at healing.
